In light of this lack of sympathy and identification with Richard, we must ask again: why does Shakespeare draw us into Richard’s confidence? The play is a study of evil, but how are we to truly understand it? How are we supposed to come to a genuine understanding of what evil is?

To understand how to go about it, we should first look at how not to go about it.
