Rousseau emphasizes the historical or evolutionary character of the inquiry, which is intended “to mark, in the progress of things, the moment when, right replacing violence, nature was subjected to law; to explain by what chain of wonders the strong could resolve to serve the weak, and the people to purchase an idea of repose at the price of real felicity.”
