One could contrast the title, “Discourse on the origin and foundations of inequality among men,” with the question asked, “what is the origin of inequality among men; and is it authorized by natural law?” Notice there is no mention of natural law in the title, “origin” becomes “origin and foundations.” We should think through the implications of these differences.

One likewise can ponder the implications of the Aristotelian epigram: “what is natural has to be investigated not in beings that are depraved, but in those that are good according to nature.”
