In his reenactment of the fall of man, Angelo doesn’t blame Eve, rather he blames himself. The fact of the matter is many men resent and fear women because they are supposed to be masters of themselves and yet they are fatally vulnerable to them. Nothing disarms him as easily as the love of a woman.
Now contrast this view with that of the Duke and Julietta: they think that the primary responsibility for the mutual act resides with the woman. Why do they both think so? Is there not the assumption that women have an easier time of controlling their sexual appetite, of displaying sexual restraint? Do we not presume that women are not as spontaneously and powerfully as aroused as men can be? Think here of the importance of foreplay.
